When a problem has taken over your attention, it can become hard to see anything else. You may know exactly what you want to stop but feel less certain about what you want instead.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, or SFBT, helps make that preferred future clearer and turns it into realistic next steps.
Solution-focused therapy doesn't rush past pain or tell you to look on the bright side. Your experience deserves to be heard. At the same time, therapy should help you notice your abilities, choices, supports, and moments when the problem is less powerful.
Your therapist may ask:
These aren't test questions. They help us notice useful information from your own life.
With depression, SFBT can help you identify small signs of energy, connection, or interest and build from them.
With anxiety, it can help you notice times when you handled uncertainty or acted even while nervous.
With PTSD, it can support choice, recognize survival strengths, and help define what greater safety and freedom would look like now.
SFBT is often combined with CBT and DBT skills. The goal is not to finish therapy as quickly as possible. The goal is to keep therapy focused on changes that matter to you.
You have already done things to survive, adapt, care for others, and keep going. Therapy can help you recognize those strengths and use them with greater intention.
